Yes, acupuncture can be very helpful for constipation.
According to research, 14% of women and 12% of men experience chronic constipation. That’s about 4 million people in the US.
So if this is you, you’re in good company.
It’s much more common than people realize, because it’s not a topic most people are comfortable discussing with their family and friends.
But we treat constipation very often in clinic, and acupuncture is generally really helpful.
Bowel movements and digestive health are extremely important in Chinese medicine.
If you’ve had acupuncture before, your acupuncturist probably asked you about your bowel movements, even if that was not why you went for treatment!
This is because acupuncture always looks at the big picture of your health, and digestion is an important facet of that. Asking about bowel movements is an excellent way to evaluate someone’s overall digestive health.
So in a nutshell, constipation indicates an imbalance that needs to be addressed – and acupuncture can have excellent results.
In a 2020 study, researchers concluded that,
“Current evidence suggests that acupuncture is an efficient and safe treatment for constipation.
Acupuncture increased stool frequency, improved stool formation, alleviated constipation symptoms, and improved quality of life.” (Reference)
If you’re tired of dealing with any of these constipation symptoms, I encourage you to give acupuncture a try:
- – Difficult or painful bowel movements
- – Bowel movements three or less times a week
- – Feeling bloated or uncomfortable
- – Feeling sluggish
- – Feeling of incomplete bowel movements
- – Abdominal pain
